How do you get from Canggu to the Gili islands?

There is no direct connection between Canggu and the Gili islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno). It will be a combination of a car drive and a fast boat ride.

You have some options! You can book a fast boat to the Gili islands from either Padang Bai or Serangan harbour in Bali. Most fast boat operators offer free hotel pickup and drop-off service from Canggu (not further than Canggu Station). In case your hotel’s location is outside the free area there can be an additional charge by the boat operator. We explain more about this at the end of this article.

Getting from Canggu to Padang Bai by car takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. When you use the free hotel pickup service it can take a bit longer as the operator will also need to pick up other guests around Canggu and other popular tourist areas in south Bali.

Serangan is a quicker journey from Canggu, but you will have a longer boat journey, around two and half hours. Padang Bai is farther away from Canggu, but a quick boat journey, about an hour and a half. So it depends on what sort of sailor you are. In case you like to spend as little time in a car we suggest taking the Padang Bai to Gili route for your trip from Canggu to Gili.

Another, but a less popular option is to get a cheap and quick flight to Lombok, then head up to Bangsal, Teluk Kode or Teluk Nara and hop on a boat to the Gili islands.

How much does it cost to get from Canggu to the Gili islands?

Prices from Canggu to the Gili islands start from $25 USD to $50 USD per person. Depending on which ferry route you choose, boat operator and if the boat operator offers free hotel pickup service. Some people choose to travel to the ferry port by private car, which will add an IDR 250.000 / 400.000 (approx) to the total cost.

Free hotel shuttle service from Canggu to the port of departure (Padang Bai or Serangan)

Almost all fast boat operators offer free hotel pickup service from all the popular tourist spots in south Bali, including Canggu. Because Canggu’s location is on the edge of the free pick up area, the free hotel shuttle service will not be available from all areas in Canggu. However, if your location is outside the free pick up area you can always request to be picked up from a central collection point in Canggu. Simply take a cheap taxi from your hotel or villa to the central collection point. The boat operator will inform you about the available options once your booking has been received. In case you do prefer to be picked up from your hotel or villa when the location is outside the free zone, there can be an additional charge by the boat operator which usually is not more than IDR 150,000 per person.
